Calculating the trade-in amount

Updated 3 months ago4 min read

To evaluate the amount at which an item will be traded in, Reuse relies on criteria and purchasing rules for those criteria.

First, you will create the criteria on which you base your evaluation of the trade-in amount, along with all the possible values for those criteria.
Example: the year the item was first put into circulation, the condition of the item, its options, its power output, etc.
For the "Item condition" criterion, the values could be: New, Like new, Good condition, Poor condition.

Second, for each criterion value, you will create a purchasing rule. This rule specifies whether a penalty or a bonus is applied to the trade-in amount for each value. You can also specify that for certain values the item will not be accepted for trade-in.

Example: an item for which the value "Poor condition" is selected for the Item condition criterion must be rejected. No trade-in amount will then be offered.

The amount based on criteria

Reuse will propose an estimated trade-in amount for each item based on your criteria and purchasing rules. To calculate this amount, we start from the item's catalogue price — its new price — and apply penalties and bonuses as a percentage or in euros.

Example: You are accepting trade-ins for small household appliances.
***To estimate trade-in amounts you rely on 2 criteria: their functional condition and their visual condition.

  • You accept any appliance that works correctly at 60% of its new value.
  • If the appliance nevertheless has defects (scratches or dents, for example), you want to deduct 10% from the trade-in amount.***
    - For the presence of additional accessories you apply a 10% bonus.

The purchasing rule for correct functionality must apply a 40% penalty, and the one for visual condition showing defects must apply a 10% penalty. The one concerning the presence of additional accessories will offer a 10% bonus.

Step 1: Create the criteria

Step-by-step tutorial — Trade-in criteria (8 steps — view in Tango)

  1. In the side menu, click on Criteria
  2. Then click the Add a criterion button.
  3. Select the display type you want for the different possible values. They can appear as a dropdown list or as radio buttons. In all cases, only one value can be selected by the user.
  4. Enter the criterion label. You can also add a suffix that will appear after the selected value (for example: km, months, years, etc.).
  5. Enter the first possible value for the criterion and click Add a value to add a new one.
  6. Repeat the operation until you have created all the possible values for this criterion.
  7. Click Save when you are done.
  8. All created criteria appear in a table. You can edit or delete a criterion by clicking the action button at the end of the row.

Step 2: Create the purchasing rules

Step-by-step tutorial — Purchasing rules (9 steps — view in Tango)

  1. In the side menu, click on Purchasing rules
  2. Click the New purchasing rule button
  3. You can apply the purchasing rule to one or more specific models or to one or more item categories. Choose the appropriate option and select the elements from the list.
  4. If you work in B2B and "referrers" are offering you items, you can create purchasing rules specific to them. In that case, select the referrer for whom the rule will be applied.
  5. Select from the list the criterion for which you are creating a rule.
  6. Select one of the existing values for the criterion.
  7. Then choose the action to apply. You can apply a bonus to the trade-in amount, apply a penalty, or choose to reject the item for the selected value.
  8. Enter the percentage of bonus or penalty to apply to the trade-in amount.
  9. When you are done, click the Save button. Then repeat the process for all criterion values that should be taken into account in the calculation of the trade-in amount.

Note: If a criterion value has no impact on the trade-in amount, do not create a purchasing rule for that value.

Taking parts and operations into account

It is possible to account for additional costs arising from the replacement of parts or from cleaning, restoration, repair operations, etc. The costs incurred by these operations would then be deducted from the amount proposed for the trade-in.

For these costs to be taken into account, simply add a step of the "parts replacement" type to the diagnostic scenario. For each part or operation selected, the amount associated with it will be deducted from the amount proposed for the trade-in.
