The charge attempt for a free amount invoice may however fail if your PSP is unable to charge the customer.
The funds may be insufficient on the customer's card, their card may have expired, etc.
For more information on errors returned by your PSP, you can consult this article.
Warning: it is also possible that a maximum charge threshold is set in your PSP and that you are attempting to charge an amount exceeding this threshold. You will then see a fraud attempt error in the back office at the time of the charge attempt. Contact your PSP to increase this threshold if needed.
If the charge attempt fails, an error message is displayed.
And a transaction with a "payment failed" status is generated.

November 2024 update: rentals with an unpaid free invoice now move to "dispute" status.
Warning: this change is not retroactive for your existing rentals that had one or more unpaid free invoices at the time of the update.
This dispute status will be maintained on the rental until the charge succeeds or the invoice is cancelled.
You can retry the charge for this transaction if needed, after asking the customer to update their credit card on their subscription.
For more information on updating their card by the customer, consult this article.
The new attempt, if successful, will cause the rental to revert to its previous status before "dispute".
If it fails again, the rental will remain in "dispute" status.
