SEPA Direct Debit with Stripe (subscription only)
SEPA Direct Debit with Stripe (subscription only)
Since version 1.12.0, you can enable SEPA direct debit with Stripe. Before enabling this payment method, make sure you meet the following prerequisites:
- You must use the Stripe online payment gateway
- Your Stripe account must be verified (on Stripe)
- Your Stripe webhook must listen to the necessary events: if you have been using Rental since before April 2025, please contact our support team and ask us to perform the corresponding configuration
- You must offer subscriptions: this payment method is not used for short-term rentals
If you meet these prerequisites, you can enable SEPA direct debit by checking the toggle. The system verifies your eligibility (please note, it only verifies that your Stripe account is verified; it does not verify your webhook configuration) before activation.
Warning, a note for merchants managing low stock on certain products: since the SEPA payment response may arrive after a few minutes, it is possible to end up with a rental created when no stock is available anymore (the last item in stock may have been rented out in the meantime).
If the checkbox is checked, SEPA direct debit is active on your platform. You can, in the case of a subscription-based rental, offer SEPA as the only payment method. To do so, simply enable it.
What changes for your customers – In the cart
When subscribing to a subscription, your customers now have the option to select the "SEPA Direct Debit" payment method. They must then enter their IBAN along with their billing information. This information is collected and processed by Stripe.
The Rental platform receives an alias from Stripe, which allows it to initiate a new direct debit each month or in the case of a free billing event. The process works the same way as for a credit card payment.
What changes for your customers – At order confirmation
When your customer has entered their SEPA payment information, an order confirmation page informs them that their rental has been recorded subject to validation of their payment.
You can modify this text in your translations if you wish.
What changes for your customers – Updating provided data
Your customers can update the payment method provided at the time of subscription from their customer account by clicking on Gérer.
The customer will be redirected to the payment method update page.
They will be able to choose to pay for their subscription going forward by credit card, a SEPA direct debit from a different bank account, or Google Pay.
